The Sexist Backlash to Ghostbusters

A straight, white Matthew McConaughey solves the 1980s AIDS pandemic. Another straight, white, cisgender guy plays his trans sidekick. Give them both Oscars! One of Hollywood’s most beautiful straight women plays a lesbian “monster”: give her the Oscar! Felicity Huffman, one of TV’s celebrated “desperate housewives” plays a trans woman: nominate her! Two straight heartthrobs portray gay lovers. Shower them with noms! But whatever you do, do NOT reboot Ghostbusters as a female-driven comedy, even if the man at the helm is responsible for some of the funniest and highest grossing comedies of the last five years, including Bridesmaids, Spy, and The Heat. Those 3 films, BTW, are headlined by women. Let’s not pretend that sexism isn’t a major component of the ridicule for the new Ghostbusters. “But that trailer was horrible!” Really? Have you sat through any of the Hangover or Meet the Fockers sequels? Have you endured the torture of an episode of 2 and a half men? Even if Ghostbusters ends up being a pile of crap, it’ll be no worse than most of the male-driven comedies we celebrate in the US.
